Optimising performance in multi-metal & multi-machining applications
As part of our new series of case studies released to highlight the benefits of switching to Castrol products, these case studies detail real-life examples of benefits and savings of Aerospace industry companies switching to Castrol products. This first case study focuses on Kun Aerospace who were experiencing machining quality issues. They switched to Castrol Hysol MB 50 - a high-performance soluble metalworking fluid and here is what happened..
Read the case study summary to see how moving to Castrol Castrol Hysol ML 50 achieved these figures.
Sector: Industrial
Sub-sector: Aerospace
Application: Milling and Turning (General Machining)
Product: Castrol Hysol ML 50
Background
Our client’s existing fluids were not performing to the required standard, creating several issues during the machining process. Tasked with finding a solution, we recommended Hysol MB 50 and suggested several quality control measures. The outcome was extremely positive, with improvements in performance, productivity and operating conditions.
Challenge
Kun Aerospace, based in Chennai, India, is one of the fastest-growing aero-component suppliers in the industry, supplying major players, such as Pratt & Whitney, Airbus, Boeing, Eaton, and Rolls Royce. Kun Aerospace manufactures complex components using a range of different metallurgies, including nickel alloys (Inconel), titanium alloys, yellow metals, and aerospace aluminium (7000 series).
Kun had been using several different water-soluble cutting fluids in their machining processes from Castrol competitors, TRIM and Houghton & Blaser. The existing fluids were not performing to the required standard, creating issues like black staining, premature sump failure, and unpleasant odours on the shop floor. All this was squeezing the company’s profit margin.
Solution
A thorough review of each application and metallurgical process was completed. After due consideration, Hysol MB 50 high-performance soluble metalworking fluid was recommended which could be used across all Kun’s machine operations.
To ensure optimum performance, a specialist was stationed on-site to monitor KPIs and an intensive training course on the basics of water-soluble coolant technology and best maintenance practices was conducted.
Outcome
The client was delighted with the results. Hysol MB 50 improved performance across all of Kun’s machining applications and metallurgy, including nickel, bronze and titanium. Hysol MB 50 is chlorine and sulphur-free, and thanks to its unique formulation, it performs at the same level as heavy-duty soluble oils without any of the unpleasant side effects.
As a result, after a rigorous trial, there was no black staining in any of the aluminium components and no foul smell on the shop floor. The tight, stable emulsion of Hysol MB 50 also meant the oil’s pH and concentration levels remained extremely stable throughout.
