The SB Co. is a pioneering innovator in advanced structural energy storage solutions
The Structural Battery Company and Hyperbat cement strategic partnership to accelerate structural battery integration across aerospace and defence.
The Structural Battery Company (The SB Co.), a pioneering deep-tech start-up developing multifunctional structural energy systems, is pleased to announce an expanded strategic partnership with Hyperbat, one of the UK’s foremost battery system manufacturers. After more than a year of close collaboration, the two companies are now entering the next phase of their joint mission: to commercialise structural battery technologies that combine energy storage and structural function for mission-critical platforms in aerospace and defence.
Unlike traditional batteries, structural batteries serve a dual purpose—storing energy while also carrying mechanical loads. This eliminates the need for separate structural elements, resulting in substantial weight reductions and enabling new levels of performance, endurance, and energy efficiency.
“This partnership with Hyperbat represents a key milestone in our industrialisation journey,” said John Moffat, CEO of The SB Co. “We’ve spent over a year working side by side on early-stage validation, and we’re now moving toward scalable manufacturing. Hyperbat’s expertise in laser welding, scalability, and traceability is critical to unlocking the full potential of structural batteries across demanding aerospace and defence applications.”
The collaboration brings together The SB Co.’s proprietary technology and design expertise with Hyperbat’s battery manufacturing capabilities. Initial phases of the partnership have focused on advanced materials characterisation, prototyping, and functional validation. The next phase will prioritise production readiness, including high-precision joining techniques such as laser welding, and the integration of digital traceability systems to support certification pathways.
The Structural Battery Company brings genuine innovation to structural energy storage,” said Steve Robins, Managing Director at Hyperbat. “Their tunable, multifunctional approach aligns with our focus on high-performance, safety-critical systems. By combining our engineering and manufacturing strengths, we are helping to shape the future of electrified platforms where every gram and every watt counts. This is a fantastic example of how Hyperbat can support innovation across many applications.”
This strategic partnership underscores both companies’ shared commitment to advancing lightweight, energy-dense solutions designed to meet the most stringent performance requirements of modern mobility—on the ground, in the air, and beyond.
