Collins Aerospace top priority to reduce company's carbon footprint

The Wolverhampton facility is a member of the Collins European Sustainability Council

At Collins Aerospace, a unit of Raytheon Technologies, we have been a leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the global aerospace and defence industry for years. Our Wolverhampton facility, which is home to our Actuation Systems business, provides the fundamental and operational capabilities and products that help make all flights safer and more efficient. Our advanced actuation solutions use lightweight, durable materials to develop flight controls for current and future generations of aircraft.

James Holland, Business development Director

"In my role as business development director for Actuation, and as a Wolverhampton local, I am continuously working with our team to explore how we can collectively make a positive impact in the local area and in the wider community."

Our Wolverhampton facility is a member of the Collins European Sustainability Council, which is a wide-reaching sustainability group across the company. This council brings together all of our European sites to provide a forum for sharing best practices and lessons related to projects across all areas of the business. Since 2022, we have had 140+ members engaged in our business unit-specific sustainability working group; we aim to involve as many people as possible in sustainable thinking by sharing best practices across the actuation sites.

Throughout our business unit, we are amplifying and accelerating our efforts to create more environmentally responsible technologies. At our facility in the Midlands, for example, we have established bold objectives to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 15 percent, water consumption by 10 percent and waste that goes to landfill by 10’5 by 2025. We have also set the goal of generating 100 percent of the site's electricity from renewable sources.

A campaign called "Shut it off" has been implemented by our team to continue to raise awareness and promote energy conservation. To accomplish this, employees throughout the site are urged to switch on only what is necessary at the beginning of each day and subsequently turn it off at the end. Visual aids are posted throughout the site as a way to regularly remind our employees.

Our facility is also actively involved with Warwick University's WMG Net Carbon Zero group. As part of this effort, local experts are assisted in achieving their sustainability goals. We recently hosted members of the working group to provide an overview of the Collins journey towards a decarbonized aviation industry.

I’m proud of our local and broader efforts – and the commitment by our team – to enhance and continue to improve our communities.
