Celebrating 80 Years of Engineering Excellence

MAA member Burcas is a privately owned specialist engineering business trading on a global basis

Burcas Ltd, formed in 1941 has supported a wide range of market sectors with high quality products both in factoring and distribution and precision manufactured components.

Now under third generation ownership with Mike Burrows heading up the whole operation in the capacity of Managing Director, Burcas is well positioned to continue the company’s expansion and growth in accordance with a strong and robust company strategy.

The company, based in Handsworth, Birmingham, currently occupies 35,000sqft of office and production floor space. The company is split into three operating units/sites adjacent to each other. These include specialist CNC machining including grinding, knives and paper cutting tools, special tooling and wear parts which have been combined in some cases in our comprehensive Kanban capability.

In the early years Burcas operated as a distribution business supplying a wide range of tools to the automotive and general engineering industry in the Birmingham area. Over the years several key business acquisitions expanded the range of products available whilst assisting in developing its manufacturing capability. Today, Burcas Ltd provides a unique skill in working closely with its customers to take many products/components from a development state into full scheduled production.

Indeed, it now supplies into a wide range of markets from aerospace and defence to nuclear, oil & gas, medical, and munition tooling and prototypes. Burcas also provides solution or specialist tooling as well as non-standard cutting knives for the paper, plastic and tobacco industries.

The coronavirus pandemic caused a general reduction across all levels of business with dramatic falls in commercial aerospace and oil/gas projects. This has resulted in a 12% reduction in sales from the previous year. However, much of the spare capacity has been taken up by the development of new nuclear projects and an increase in Burcas’ defence business whilst allowing the selective use of the furlough scheme resulting in no redundancies.

Mike Burrows, Managing Director, commented:
“Going forward we are of the view much of the work lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic will come back as we continue to develop the defence and nuclear work. We are looking forward to our biggest investment yet which will be £1.25 million multi-axis turn mill centre to develop some highly specified and accurate components at greatly reduced current costs and providing extremely accurate repeatability. The machine will be set up with robotic automation to run 24/7. The next few years will be exciting times indeed for Burcas.”
